Max Schrock won the javelin and placed fifth in the pole vault on Friday to highlight SBCC's day in the WSC Relays at Ventura College.

Schrock threw the javelin 42.84 meters (140-7) to finish five feet ahead of the runner-up, Jordan Holst of Cuesta. His javelin mark was a personal record as was his 4.27-meter clearance (14 feet) in the pole vault. Teammate Giovanni Giordani tied for fifth in the pole vault.

The distance medley relay unit ran 10:21.37, finishing second to state cross country champion Canyons by two seconds. The distance medley consists of legs of 1200, 400, 800 and 1600 meters. The Vaquero team was Adam Grimmitt, Anton Nilsson, Patrick Lownes-Santos and Alex Ramirez.

"That time was the fastest in at least 10 years by an SBCC team," said coach Scott Fickerson. "Our distance men ran a great race and almost held off the best distance team in the state. Patrick ran a great 800 to give us a solid lead."

Fickerson added that Schrock had an outstanding day and "rose to the level of competition. It's great to see him developing into a well-rounded athlete."

Edward Jones was third in the discus at 35.54 meters and Diego Tapia took third in the shot put at 12.33.

The Vaqueros will compete in the WSC North meet on Friday at Bakersfield.
