SBCC's Dominique Hinds ran the sixth-fastest time in school history on Saturday in the 400 at the Soka Invitational women's track and field meet in Aliso Niguel. The event featured seven four-year schools, including UC San Diego and Westmont, as well as two other Community College teams and a few club and unattached athletes.

Hinds, a freshman from Centennial High in Corona, posted a 58.21 and finished sixth in the 400 meters. She also led off the 4 x 400 relay team that placed fourth in 4:07.94. That was the 10th-best time in school history. Hinds was followed by Alexis McDuell, Marla Bonser and Jessica Escalante.

Escalante raced to fourth in the 60-meter dash (7.95) and fifth in the 200 (25.92).

"Dominque had a great day and really improved on her marks from just a week ago," said coach Scott Fickerson. "We saw the first glimpse of our strength in the long sprints by running a top-10 mark in just our first attempt at the 4 x 4. We had great attitudes and showed a lot of grit.

"This meet will pay dividends later in the season. I'm very excited to see what the ladies will do this year based on what I am seeing in these early meets."

The Vaqueros travel to Ventura on Friday to compete in the WSC Relays.
