Vaqueros Sweep Saddleback and Mt. San Jacinto
By Jimmy Friery
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Santa Barbara City College Beach Volleyball team (4-2) won all 10 of their pairs matches on Thursday at East Beach, equaling two 5-0 wins over Saddleback and Mt. San Jacinto.
The Vaqueros opted for some lineup changes, beginning with Madison Genasci and Kaylin Cooney. They would win in three sets at the top of the lineup after being the No. 2 pair in previous matches. Abigail Stenz moved up to court three with Stephanie Groswirt, building chemistry in a 2-0 sweep. Lina Husek and Maddie Papia also swept as the No. 2 pair, as did Juliette Dekker and newly inserted Vaq legend Sophie Ward as the No. 5 pair. Guilia Sophie Gentile and Camryn Chapman rounded out the results with a 15-7 third-set win on court four.
Western State Conference rival Ventura was also amongst the competition, beating Saddleback and Mt. San Jacinto each 5-0. The Vaqueros then faced Mt. San Jacinto as the final of four matches on the day.
It was an even more dominant performance than the first match as Santa Barbara swept all five of their pairs matches. Gentile/Chapman were particularly dominant on court four, winning both of their sets 21-8.
It was a productive tune-up for the Vaqueros, who welcome reigning State champion San Diego Mesa next Friday morning at East Beach. A matchup with Mira Costa will follow, ending Santa Barbara's home non-conference schedule.
