Barry flirts with no-hitter in 17-0 rout at Moorpark

Sean Barry showed you can go home again on Tuesday as he flirted with a no-hitter in SBCC's 17-0 baseball rout of Moorpark.

Barry, a 6-2 sophomore right-hander, is a former all-state pitcher from Moorpark High who played NCAA Div. 1 ball for High Point in North Carolina last year. He had a no-hitter through 6 1/3 innings on Tuesday before Riley Conlan singled for one of three hits by the Raiders (6-4, 0-2 WSC North).

Barry (1-1) went seven innings to earn his first college victory, striking out six and walking one.

"He was a Warrior on the mound and it's exciting for him because he's from the Moorpark area," said SBCC coach Jeff Walker. "We got our leadoff hitters on base, put runners in scoring position and took advantage of their mistakes."

The Raiders committed five errors leading to six unearned runs. Six Moorpark pitchers issued five walks and hit four batters.

The Vaqueros, ranked No. 4 in Southern Cal, won their fourth in a row and notched their third shutout of the year to improve to 9-1 overall and 2-0 in conference. SBCC is tied for first with No. 3 Oxnard and No. 13 Hancock.

James Hill paced the season-high 18-hit offense by going 3-5 with two RBIs and two runs. The sophomore catcher has a four-game hitting streak and is batting .563 during that stretch. He raised his team-high average to .424 and he's had at least two hits in six of his eight games.

James Brakka was 3-4 with two runs and designated hitter Dallas Bacon was 3-3 for the Vaqueros, who scored all their runs in three straight innings. They put up five in the third, seven in the fourth and five more in the fifth.

Spencer Erdman and Matt Henderson added two hits apiece with Henderson driving in the first run with a double in the third. Connor McManigal had two RBIs, including a run-scoring triple in the fourth that made it 8-0. Brandon Evans was 2-3 and scored three runs.

The No. 4 Vaqueros travel to No. 3 Oxnard for a first-place showdown on Thursday at 2 p.m., then host the Condors on Saturday at 1 p.m. Oxnard knocked SBCC out of the playoffs last year in the Sectionals, one step from the State Final Four.
