SANTA MARIA, CA – The SBCC men's basketball team went 0-3 this past weekend at the Home Motors Tournament hosted by Allan Hancock, falling to San Diego City 96-63, Allan Hancock 83-67 and San Jose 81-66.
SD City 96, SBCC 63
The Vaqueros (1-6) started the weekend off against a San Diego City side that had gotten out to a 2-0 start to the season. Despite a big game from forward Aidan Mandel, who put in his second straight 20-point game, the Knights would take the lead for good four minutes in and never looked back.
SDCC went up by 12 points on a three-pointer by Jaden Lebel at the 11:43 mark of the first half and the lead didn't drop back to single-digits the rest of the way.
Mandel topped his Vaquero season-high of 22 points from two days earlier against Canyons, connecting on 11-of-16 (.688) shots to go with a team-high six rebounds. Trevor Lee also put in 11 points on 4-of-6 from the field.
Santa Barbara was efficient from the field once again shooting 47.4 percent, but couldn't slow down the Knights who shot a blistering 67.3 percent from the field and 66.7 percent on threes.
Allan Hancock 83, SBCC 67
Against the host Bulldogs (2-4) on Saturday, SBCC got double-digit scoring efforts from Wilfrid Nado (19 points), Mandel (16) and Elijah Simpson (10).
After a tight first half ended 38-36 in favor of Hancock, things remained close for the next 10 minutes. Jaden Reyes hit a three to make it a one-point game 56-55 with 10:26 left on the clock. The Bulldogs went on a 9-0 run from there and would pull away, taking their largest lead of 16 points in the final minute.
Mandel notched his first double-double of the year with 16 points (7-15 FG) and 10 boards.
San Jose 81, SBCC 66
Closing the weekend out against San Jose (5-3), Mandel had another great showing on the offensive end with a game-high 22 points on 11-of-17 (.647) from the field, his third 20-point outing in four tries.
A Truman Teuber three started an 8-0 run for the Vaqueros as they went up 23-15 midway through the opening half. The Jaguars answered with a 13-4 run to take a one-point lead, 30-29. They eventually went into the break leading 38-35.
SBCC would never lead in the second half, with San Jose pushing the lead into double-figures while shooting 70 percent (14-20 FG) from the field over the final 20 minutes.
Teuber ended his day a perfect 3-of-3 from deep for a season-high 11 points.
