Hubbard Named State Player of the Week
By Jimmy Friery
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — As the Vaquero Men's Volleyball program capped their phenomenal regular season with a Northern Region championship, middle blocker Keegan Hubbard earned some individual accolades, too. The sophomore from Castro Valley was named the California Community College Men's Volleyball Coaches Association (CCCMVCA) Player of the Week.
Hubbard was instrumental in both road wins on the week. In Wednesday's sweep over Antelope Valley, he had a near-perfect 10 kills on 11 swings (.909) plus two aces. On Friday against Pierce, he hit .615 (9-1-13) with five blocks in the four-set victory. Combined, that amounts to a .750 hitting percentage with a remarkably efficient 18 kills on 24 swings.
But he has been doing it all season. Hubbard (80) and fellow middle Nick Schultz (81) are vying for the program's all-time single-season blocks record—they both have already broken the 78 that To'o To'o had in 2014.
Hubbard and the North's top-seeded Vaqueros host San Diego Mesa for a 3C2A Quarterfinal match on Friday in Rob Gym, with first serve scheduled for 6 p.m.
