Alex Heuchert has been named Athlete of the Week by the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table. The sophomore from San Marcos High finished fourth in the State men's cross country championships on Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno.
His time of 20:20 was the fastest ever by an SBCC runner on the 4-mile course and he earned All-American honors as one of the top 13 finishers. Heuchert was fourth in the WSC Championships and third in the Southern Cal Regional.
The Vaqueros ran the fastest time in school history (100 minutes, 47 seconds) on the course at State and posted their highest finish of 7th place.
"He's very coachable and he's the first athlete I've ever had who's requested to come in and meet with me before every race," said coach Scott Fickerson. "He's been incredibly trusting from Day 1 and he's extremely dependable. He was the only athlete on our team who didn't miss a practice and was never late for a practice.
"As the level of competition goes up, he works harder and harder. He's a true example of hard work paying off. It's been an honor to work with him."
