Women’s Golf Rallies to Capture Third Place at WSC Championship
The Santa Barbara City College women's golf team found themselves in a bit of a hole after a tough first round on Sunday at Cypress Ridge Golf Course, but would respond with on Monday at Santa Maria Country Club to take third place in the WSC Championship.
The Vaqueros were unfamiliar with Cypress Ridge when they arrived on Sunday, giving them a disadvantage.
"Tough trek, going in blind. I thought we did ok," said head coach Devin Engebretsen. "Just going in blind to tracks you've never seen, kind of tough."
Beyond the unfamiliarity with the course, the team had to battle themselves on the first day.
"Day one, putting was an issue. But the coaching staff really challenged them on Day Two to dial up their focus on the greens and be more mindful of speed," said Enegebretsen.
Monday's second round of the championship placed all the teams in Santa Maria, and with a clear objective, the team responded.
"We talked about it. We gave them a goal, and they all basically met that goal. On Monday, we putted a lot better," said Engebretsen.
"Camryn Chapman did a great job. She shot a 98 on Sunday and came back on Monday on a harder course with a 92," said Engebretsen.
By capturing third place in the WSC Championship, the Vaqs secured a place in the SoCal regionals on Nov. 9 and 10.
"We're looking forward to the SoCal regionals which will be at Olivas Links. I think the athletes are optimistic that we can get this done and get to the state championship as a team," said Engebretsen.
