Brandie Harris, a record-setting forward on the women's soccer team, has been named Scholar-Athlete of the Year for SBCC. She received her award on Monday during the weekly press luncheon of the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table.
The sophomore from Dos Pueblos High broke the school record with 30 goals last year during a 13-6-2 campaign that produced a runner-up finish in the Western State Conference (8-2-2). She scored 44 goals in her two-year career.
Harris had five hat tricks last year and piled up 11 points in a game with five goals and an assist in a 7-0 win over Oxnard on Oct. 25.
She was the WSC North Player of the Year and her 64 points tied Jessica Domenichelli for the single-season school record.
Harris carries a 3.77 GPA with 49 units completed. She'll receive her AA degree in Math and Science. "Soccer has helped keep me on track academically," said Harris, who hopes to become a nurse.
Harris recently accepted an athletic scholarship to Cal State San Bernardino, where she will play with Vaquero teammate Heather Rivera.
She says she's enjoyed her time at SBCC.
"This is the best school I've ever been to," she stated. "The teachers are really helpful. It's easier to succeed when you're able to ask questions and get a good solid answer back. The teachers help us out with everything."
