Approximately 20 student-athletes from the SBCC men's and women's track teams will volunteer on Saturday, Feb. 28 for the Special Olympics Polar Plunge at Leadbetter Beach.
"We're going to help with breakfast/check-in and tear-down after the event," said middle distance runner Alex Heuchert, who's a member of the Vaqueros' Captain's Council. "This will be another great opportunity for SBCC, especially the track team, to help out the community!"
Other track athletes on the Captain's Council are Courtney Linhares, Alyssa Garrett and Bas van Leersum.
The Polar Plunge is a unique opportunity for individuals, organizations, and anyone to support people with intellectual disabilities by running (or pretending to jump) into the chilly waters of the Pacific Ocean.
A few hundred people are expected to weather the cold and plunge into 55-degree waters on February 28, 2015 to support Special Olympics Santa Barbara. Sign-up is from 10 to 11:30 a.m., opening ceremonies at 11:45 a.m. and the Plunge is set for noon.
Each participant who raises a minimum of $50 gets a long-sleeve shirt, a goody bag, and can enjoy the festivities (either by taking the plunge or watching from the "Chicken Coop"). Costumes aren't mandatory but very much encouraged. Raise more than $50, and you will have the opportunity to earn cool and fun prizes.
