Nelson captures WSC title in hammer throw

Maya Nelson won a conference title in the hammer for SBCC on Friday in the WSC Championships women's track and field meet at Bakersfield College.

The freshman uncorked a throw of 42.63 meters (139-10 1/3) for the No. 2 mark in school history. She beat the runner-up, Brittani Wynn of Antelope Valley, by 2.64 meters. Kaytee Krivulka set the all-time SBCC hammer record of 44.58 meters in 2013.

Nelson had a superb meet, amassing 22 points. She won the hammer, took third in the discus in 38.44 meters, fifth in the javelin and seventh in the shot put (9.95m).

Hannah Arnold also qualified for the Southern Cal Prelims by taking sixth in the 100 in 12.94. Yuliana Garibay (6th in 3000 steeplechase, 13:03.11) made the So Cal meet as well.

West Los Angeles won the WSC women's title with 177.5 points, edging Canyons (167). The Vaqueros were eighth in the 11-team field.

The So Cal Prelims will be held on Saturday at Antelope Valley College in Lancaster and the finals will be a week later, on Saturday, May 14.
