Santa Barbara City College women's water polo team competed in the 27th annual Battle of the Beach hosted by Long Beach City College. The Vaqueros played four games, beating Cerritos, No. 9 Delta, No. 3 Orange Coast, and falling to No. 1 Long Beach City. Their efforts earned them second place at the tournament.
SBCC 16- Cerritos 7: SBCC never looked back after scoring the first goal against the hosting Falcons. In a total team effort victory, 11 different players scored goals. Goalies Ava Barclay and Riley Olney both recorded 5 blocks.
SBCC 17 -Delta 8: This was another great team effort win. Against the Mustangs, seven separate Vaqueros scored goals. Sophie McGehee, Lucy Grooms, May Guidoux, and Avery Jensen all recorded hat tricks.
SBCC 13 - Orange Coast 12 3OT: The Vaqueros held the lead at 10-5 going into the fourth quarter. The Pirates found a surge of effort and took the game into overtime. McGehee secured the win with the final goal in triple overtime. Head Coach Chuckie Roth said about the game: "Really proud of this team for continuing to battle. We lost momentum in the last quarter. Despite going down, the team found a way to fight back and secure the win." Defending the cage, Barclay had 6 saves and 4 steals.
SBCC 7 - Long Beach 15: After the overtime game, No.2 SBCC saw No. 1 Long Beach on their home turf. Coach Roth said, "We learned a lot from this game. We identified areas of growth and challenged ourselves against a high-level opponent. All in all, this weekend was a success for our program. Avery Jensen had a great weekend. Pam Hernandez stepped up with some big key plays offensively and defensively. Jada Ashen is developing her leadership."
The Vaqueros look forward to hosting their annual Halloween Tournament at Santa Barbara High School this Saturday and Sunday. They will play five games over two days, including NCAA Division I CSU Northridge at 11:45 a.m. on Saturday.
