Eleven Heaven: Women's Water Polo Captures 11th Straight WSC Title
VENTURA, Calif. -- The No. 2-ranked Santa Barbara City College women's water polo team earned its 11th consecutive Western State Conference championship, besting Cuesta College 20-7 on Saturday at the Ventura Aquatic Center.
Katie Strohl led the Vaqueros at both ends of the pool, dishing out 4 assists and grabbing 5 steals to go with her 3 goals.
The Vaqs jumped out to an early lead, holding a 5-1 advantage after the first quarter. Avery Jensen scored twice in the opening frame, en route to a 3-goal performance.
Sophie McGehee scored twice early in the second period to help SBCC hold an 11-3 lead at the half. McGeHee finished with a team-high 4 goals.
The Vaqueros outpaced Cuesta in the second half 9-4, with scoring from May Guidoiux, Ava Pease, Jada Ashen, Luciana Grooms and Max Kerr.
Goaltender Ava Barclay finished the game with 12 saves, 5 steals and 3 assists, demonstrating her versatility in net.
SBCC is back in the pool at the SoCal Regionals from Nov. 13-15, hosted by Southwestern College in Chula Vista.
