Smiley, Jimenez are Scholar-Athletes of the Year

Kyle Smiley and Sarah Jimenez have been selected as SBCC’s male and female Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the 2015-16 season. They were honored at the 23rd annual SBCC Golf Classic on Monday, March 14 at La Cumbre Country Club.

Jon Newton was the head coach at San Marcos High for the last two seasons.

Former SBCC player Jon Newton has been named head coach of the men’s volleyball team.

Coach Jones returns to alma mater
Coach Jones returns to alma mater

SBCC men’s volleyball coach Matt Jones is returning to Harvard, where he was a star player from 2009-12. Jones, the all-time Crimson leader in kills (1,218) and aces (97), will be an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s volleyball teams.

Pierce rallies for 3-1 win over Vaqueros

L.A. Pierce dropped the first set on Friday night, then claimed the next three for a 3-1 men’s volleyball win to spoil SBCC’s season finale at the Sports Pavlion. The scores were 21-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-12.

Haward Gomes had 10 kills and hit .533 on Friday night but El Camino was too much for SBCC in a 25-22, 25-21, 25-15 men’s volleyball sweep in the Sports Pavilion.

Haward Gomes notched a season-high 14 kills with nine digs on Wednesday night as SBCC cruised to a 25-12, 25-22, 25-11 WSC men’s volleyball victory at L.A. Trade Tech.

Moorpark tops Vaqueros 3-1

Moorpark won a 27-25 overtime decision in the first set on Friday night went on to defeat SBCC 3-1 in a WSC men’s volleyball match at Moorpark. The Raiders (6-10, 5-4) prevailed 27-25, 21-25, 25-22, 25-19 and got revenge on the Vaqueros (8-8, 3-6), who beat them 3-1 on March 9.

Santa Monica outlasts Vaqueros 3-1

Santa Monica prevailed 34-32 in the longest set of the year on Wednesday night and went on to defeat SBCC 3-1 in a WSC men’s volleyball match at the Sports Pavilion. The scores were 25-17, 24-26, 34-32, 25-15.

Vaqueros swept by first-place Vikings

Long Beach City College outhit SBCC .320 to .120 on Friday night in a 25-16, 26-24, 25-18 men’s volleyball sweep at Viking Gym.

Middle blocker Robert Gulvin had 13 kills, nine blocks and a .611 hitting percentage on Wednesday night, leading SBCC to a 3-2 men’s volleyball win over L.A. Pierce in Woodland Hills. The scores were 25-20, 10-25, 25-23, 18-25, 15-9.

Taylor McCluskey pounded a season-high 22 kills and dug 10 balls on Wednesday night to lead SBCC to a 3-1 men’s volleyball win over Moorpark in a WSC match at the Sports Pavilion. The scores were 25-23, 21-25, 25-18, 25-21.

Taylor McCluskey had 18 kills and a season-high 15 digs on Wednesday night but Long Beach rallied for a 3-1 victory over SBCC in the WSC men’s volleyball opener at the Sports Pavilion. The scores were 18-25, 25-17, 26-24, 25-19.
